b.) Now open the jar, add six (6) ants, and reseal the jar. How long will they survive and
why? What is the trophic level of the ants?
c) Now to the original jar ecosystem, add six (6) ants and one (1) lizard, and reseal the jar.
What is the trophic level of the lizard assuming it eats ants? How long will the
lizard survive and why?
d.) Explain how the water cycle might behave differently duribcing the day and night and
explain why.

Class Project Outline
Goal:
To conduct an in-depth exploration of a topic of your choice that is linked to an issue in wildlife
or fisheries management. This is not a natural history assignment of a particular species. Species
(one or more) of interest can be used as examples (focal species) in your exploration of the
broader issue. We will discuss example issues in class. The issues could be occurring in any
country.
Examples of major and continuing issues include but are certainly not limited to:
 Disease and parasites
 Pollution of all types
 Exotic species including influence on other species and the environment
 Nutrition
 Hunting and over exploitation
 Trade-off of renewable energy and land use
 Long-tern climate change (this is not a discussion of the potential role of humans per se)
 and a lot more…
Schedule:
The following is subject to change, but initially—
 One paragraph (typed, etc.) description of the issue (can have two issues and we can
discuss in class which to use)
o DUE 19 SEPTEMBER IN CLASS
 publish of paper due (see below)
o DUE 5 OCTOBER IN CLASS
 Student brief class summary of key points/class questions
o STARTING 17 OCTOBER
 Final version of paper due
o DUE 14 NOVEMBER
General format for paper:
 Same format as for chapter summaries
 Instead of “Questions”, provide brief list of information needs and potential solutions
 Two pages is the desired length (singe spaced, etc.)
 Third page for literatubcire Cited (we will discuss)
