Module 1 – Case
THE WRITING PROCESS, DESCRIPTIVE AND NARRATIVE
Assignment Overview
Narrative Essay
Length: no less than 700 words, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-pt. font size, one-inch margins.
This essay is to consist of your own thoughts, words, and ideas. No secondary sources are to be used in this essay.
The first person “I” may be used in this first essay.
Case Assignment
For this assignment, write a Narrative Essay using one of the topics listed below. Remember that a narrative tells a story, so in addition to conveying the event in a clear, descriptive, chronological order, you want to engage the reader. You may do so by appealing to the reader’s emotions or possibly sharing a story your reader can relate to.
A well-organized narrative essay has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention and invite them in. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation; provide some sort of context about where and when the event took place. The last sentence of the introduction in a traditional essay is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay. In a narrative essay, the thesis might be the lesson learned or “moral” of the story. Yet you may wish not to include that piece and wait until the conclusion to reveal the “takeaway” to your reader.
A well-supported narrative essay includes plenty of details and examples that invite the reader into the story—as though they are actually there. For organizational purposes, consider the best way to break down the story into sections in the body of the essay. Remember that each body paragraph should have a main point and that all body paragraphs are cohesive—they “connect” to form a unifying story.
The conclusion, or closing, of a narrative is the big reveal and might include the lesson learned or the “moral” of the story. This takeaway should leave a lasting impression on the reader, connecting the story or experience to their world in some way.
Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 1 Case expectations and the University General Education rubric for English found in the course syllabus.
The time when you had to let go of someone or something important and the lessons that were learned
The time you inspired someone and the result
The time you made a difficult decision that made all the difference
The time you took a risk to achieve something and what you learned
The moment when you realized that you were an adult and how that moment changed you forever
Assignment Expectations
Write an organized and cohesive Narrative essay that is no less than 700 words in length.
Write clearly and cohesively when expressing one’s ideas and/or intended purpose.
Clearly state and support a main point in an organized and cohesive essay.

Case Assignment
Academic Integrity
University values academic integrity, and the Module 1 Case will be devoted to this topic. It is important that we discuss this issue early in our course. To earn your degree, you will be required to write research papers and complete worksheets, quizzes, and tests. Choosing to do your best work with pride and ownership is important as you continue your academic journey. Think about the meaning of Academic Integrity and view how UNI defines and values integrity in academia in the University Catalog – Policy Handbook, which is available online
Chapter 7 (Box 7.2) in Thriving book will help you better understand what plagiarism is and how it is a violation of academic integrity. In this chapter, you will also acquire strategies to locate and evaluate information, construct papers and reports, and use writing as a tool to learn deeply and think critically. This will help you develop as a scholar.

University provides students with Turnitin (TII), an online support tool that helps ensure that academic work is of the highest integrity. To best equip yourself on how to use this tool, review the instructions under Resources for Student Success located below.
Assignment Expectations
After review of all materials in this assignment, answer the questions from “7.5 Is It or Is It Not Plagiarism?” within the Chapter 7 Exercises on page 163 of Thriving book for CASE 1-4.
Using a Word document, present the answers in complete sentences and paragraph form. There should be 4 or 5 sentences provided for each question that requires an explanation. Be sure to proofread, as scholarly writing is important. When you have finished, title the file with your name (Example: Module 1 Case Helen Smith). Save and upload the document to the Case 1 Dropbox.
Review the grading rubric to ensure all requirements are met.

Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office is required for assignments at University. A free download of Office 365 is available to you as a student. Follow the instructions on the Student Support Resources guide.
Tutor.com
You will see a Free Tutoring link in the navigation bar of your course. (If you do not see it, it may be under the “More” menu.)
Turnitin (TII) and the Practice Dropbox
Turnitin is linked directly to the assignment’s Dropbox in this course. Once you submit an assignment to the Dropbox, Turnitin automatically generates a value called the Similarity Score, indicating how much matching text (text matching sources or other written papers) is present in your essay. You can click on the colored square to see the Similarity Report, which shows the sources that correspond to text within the paper.
Courses contain a Practice Dropbox that is also linked to TII. Before submitting the assignment to the module Case or SLP dropbox, the Practice Dropbox may be used to view the assignment’s similarity score.
For more information on Turnitin, access the Turnitin Guide under the My Resources tab on the Trident Portal page or by clicking on the following link

Instructions: Questions to answer-
7.5 Is It or Is It Not Plagiarism?
The following four incidents were brought to a college judicial-review board to determine if a student had committed
plagiarism and, if so, what the penalty should be. After reading each case, respond to the questions listed below it.
CASE 1. A student turned in an essay that included substantial material copied from a published source. The student
admitted that he didn’t cite the source properly, but argued that it was because he misunderstood the directions for the
assignment, not because he was attempting to steal someone else’s ideas.
Is this plagiarism?
164
How severe is it? (Rate it on a scale from 1 = low to 5 = high)
What should the consequence or penalty be?
How could this accusation of plagiarism been avoided?
CASE 2. A student turned in a paper that was identical to a paper submitted by another student for a different course.
Is this plagiarism?
How severe is it? (Rate it on a scale from 1 = low to 5 = high)
What should the consequence or penalty be?
CASE 3. A student submitted a paper he wrote in a previous course as an extra-credit paper for a course.
Is this plagiarism?
How severe is it? (Rate it on a scale from 1 = low to 5 = high)
What should the consequence or penalty be?
CASE 4. A student submitted a paper in an art history class that contained some ideas from art critics she read about and
whose ideas she agreed with. The student didn’t cite the critics as sources, but claimed it wasn’t plagiarism because their
ideas were merely their own subjective judgments or opinions, not facts or findings; furthermore, they were opinions she
agreed with.
Is this plagiarism?
How severe is it? (Rate it on a scale from 1 = low to 5 = high)
What should the consequence or penalty be?
How could this accusation of plagiarism been avoided?
Look back at these four cases. Which do you think represents the most and least severe violation of academic integrity?
Why?
